You want some abs, right?

You want to lose stomach fat and get a firm, flat stomach...maybe even with a little definition...maybe even a six-pack.

Who doesn't? I know I do. That's why I work so hard to get and maintain my physique.

It was tough, but it's not impossible. I'm sick of hearing people say they don't have the genetics to lose stomach fat and get a firm, flat stomach, let alone get six-pack abs.

Second, you need to stop doing crunches, sit-ups, twists, leg lifts, etc. Doing hundreds and thousands of those exercises every week will not help you lose stomach fat, let alone get a flat, firm stomach and they especially won't help you get a six-pack. Not when you have a layer of flabby goo sitting on your waist line.

You need to burn the fat off your stomach and to do that you need to eat right and you need to do fat burning full body workouts.

Here's an example of a fat loss workout I just gave to a client that was specifically designed to help him lose stomach fat and get six-pack abs.

Perform this workout as a circuit and do as many circuits as you can in 15 minutes. Do this circuit before your regular workout when you're still fresh 2-3 times per week for the next 4 weeks.

1A) Dumbbell Split Squat - 10 reps per side

1B) "T" Push-up - 10 reps

1C) Overhead Squat - 10 reps

1D) Cross Body Mountain Climber - 30 seconds

1E) Push-up w/Dumbbell Row - 8 per arm

That workout will work your entire body, and each exercise is designed to put extra emphasis on your abs. If you do it right, you will feel it in your abs and you will lose stomach fat.

As far as fat loss nutrition and fat loss cardio go, here's the easiest things I can tell you. When it comes to nutrition, you've got to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, no juices sorry, limit any food that comes in a bag or box and cut your dinner portions by about 25%.

For cardio, stick with interval training rather than boring steady state cardio that lasts for hours upon hours on end. Interval training is proven to burn more stomach fat than steady state cardio and has helped virtually everyone I've ever trained lose stomach fat fast.

Now that you are armed with that fast six-pack abs workout designed to help you lose stomach fat, plus you've got a little more advice when it comes to fat loss nutrition and fat loss cardio...get to it!

Nutrient deficiencies appear to increase with age. Some colleagues at the University of Iowa looked at over 400 Iowans 79 and older living independently in rural areas and found that 80 percent reported consuming inadequate amounts of four or more nutrients. When declining energy requirements are not matched by decreased caloric intake then total body fat increases. The Atkins diet leaves your body shy on some important nutrients, such as vitamin B, and also is negative for vitamins A, C and D, anti-oxidants that slow the effects of aging and calcium. Once again the lack of exercise has to enter into the equation also.

Nutritional status may be further compromised by other problems in conjunction with the illness, such as trauma, surgery, infection drug therapy which alter nutrient requirements. This makes recovery even more difficult. Each one of the above nutrients is needed to keep an aged body in good health. Elderly individuals should try to strive for a well balanced diet and stay active. Adequate dietary fiber, as opposed to increased use of laxatives, will maintain regular bowel function and not interfere with the digestion and absorption of nutrients, as occurs with laxative use or abuse.

Some of the factors described above, like changes in the digestive system, as well as health concerns like the increased risk of fragile bones, means that nutritional needs change as you age. Euro 2008 Football Tournament Review

This summer's European Football Championships held in Switzerland and Austria has been hailed as a massive success. The vast majority of games were full of excitement and goals and there were very few unsavory incidents. Many supporters and experts have expressed their belief that the tournament was one of the best ever. The eventual winners were Spain who were regarded as the best team not only by virtue of the winning score line but also they were the team that played the best football, scored the most goals and conceded the least.

This year's European Championships was the thirteenth time it has been held since its inauguration in 1960. The tournament format was based on four groups with four teams in each. They played off against each other once and the top two teams qualified for the quarter finals. The group stage of Euro 2008 provided a fantastic display of open attacking football.

The opening game of the 2008 tournament was played out between co-hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The Swiss had high hopes that they could impress but it looked like the pressure of expectation lay heavy as they struggled. They suffered a huge blow by losing star striker Alexander Frei during the game before losing 1-0.

In Group A, Portugal eased to victories over the Czech Republic and Switzerland to become the first team to qualify. In a dramatic final game between Turkey and the Czech Republic, the former emerged victorious after coming back from two goals down to score three in the last 15 minutes of the game.

In Group B, pre-tournament favorites Germany beat Poland before surprisingly losing to Croatia in the second game. They eventually qualified in the last game but failed to impress in a narrow win over co-hosts Austria, who were also eliminated in the same game.

Group C was seen as the tightest group with Holland, France and the World Cup winners Italy battling with Romania. However the Dutch seemed to be one of the most impressive teams in the tournament after comfortably beating Italy 3-0 and France 4-1. With Holland comfortably through, Italy and France met each other to decide the final qualification. In a tense game the Italians proved to be more resilient as they won 2-0.

In Group D Spain and Russia demonstrated some of the best attacking football in the whole tournament. The Spanish with their quick one touch football and the clinical shooting of Fernando Torres and David Villa easily qualified with victories over Russia, Greece and Sweden. The Russians followed with an impressive victory in the last game against the Swedes.

The quarter finals are typically the point when the best raise their game. This is often the case with Germany. Having struggled to qualify from the group stage, they impressed by defeat a good Portuguese team and became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals. They were joined there by Turkey who in a dramatic finale managed to level the game against Croatia in the last minute before defeating them in a penalty shoot-out. Holland failed to continue their earlier impressive performances by losing to Russia and Spain managed to defeat Italy on penalties after a tense game.

The semi-finals provided fantastic entertainment. Turkey once more demonstrated their tenacity, but ultimately were unable to restrain Germany who progressed to the Final 3-2. Spain eased through after defeating Russia for the second time in tournament.

The Euro 2008 Final was played on 30 June. Spain won 1-0 with a goal from Fernando Torres and subsequently won the tournament for the first time since 1964.

First Hunter Show

Your First Hunter Show


So, you have decided to try showing in the hunter ring. If this is your first show you probably have a lot of questions about how a show is run. It is my hope that this guide will ease your worries and allow you to have a pleasant experience.

The first thing you need to do is find a show that is suited to your level of riding and the quality of your horse. Not all horse shows are the same. Unless you are riding with a good coach who will guide you through the process and have a horse who is experienced in the ring, your best bet is to start at a schooling show.

Schooling shows are usually run by riding schools in your general area. They may be closed to students from the riding school only, but many accept outside horses and riders. Call the barn before the show to find out what their policy is. They may have a small ship-in fee for outside horses, but most welcome any new participants. There are also shows at the schooling level that are held by local riding clubs. These are generally open to horses and riders from any barn but may require that you are a club member.

Hunter shows generally can be entered the day of the show. Some shows will have pre-entries, which can cut your costs somewhat. Others only allow entries the morning of the show. When looking at the list of classes available take into consideration the level of your horse and your own riding level. You should generally enter classes that are at or slightly below your current training level. For example, if you are jumping 3’ at home, you might want to try a 2’6” or 2’9” division rather than pushing your horse to the maximum you have been training at. This makes the show less stressful and will maximize the chance of having a positive first experience.

There are often classes in a range of levels available. Many shows will allow cross-entering from one level to another, but will limit how big the range of ability is. For example, you might be able to enter a 2’6” division and a 2’9” division, but would not be allowed to enter the 3’ division. This is to make it fair for all the riders involved and prevent high-level riders from sweeping the ribbons in the low level classes.

Many shows have actual divisions of classes that include 2-3 over fences classes and 1-2 flat classes. Lower level divisions are likely to have more flat classes, while higher level divisions will have more over fences classes. Each over fences class will usually have a different course to learn, but some beginning divisions or green divisions will offer a schooling class that is the same as a later class, or not vary the courses very much to keep things simple for the riders.

When selecting the classes you want to enter keep in mind that the show day can get very long and it isn’t fair to put your horse into more classes that he can handle. Many horses can’t manage more than 4-5 classes in a day. Others who are very fit can manage more. If you do enter a lot of classes make sure that there are some breaks in between so you are not on your horse all day long.

After entering your classes take some time to study the courses. Usually there will be papers with the courses written on them placed somewhere near the arena. You should be able to study the course while looking at the actual ring and fences so that you will be familiar with what the course looks like. It is very important to memorize these courses and refresh yourself before going into the ring as going off course will get you disqualified. Sometimes it is easiest to memorize your course just before the class so that you don’t get the different patterns mixed up in your head.

When your division begins you may be presented with an order of go. This tells you which horses are expected to enter the ring in what order. Other schooling shows just accept horses into the ring when the riders are ready. If at all possible watch a couple of horses and riders around the course before your turn so that you see how the course rides and where potential trouble may lie.

The flat classes are generally held either at the beginning or the end of a division. In a flat class all the horses are brought into the ring at once. They are asked to walk and trot on the rail in each direction. The canter may be asked for as a group, but if the class is large or the level is low the judge will often split the class into two groups, each one having a turn on the rail to show off their canter. After the class is finished the judge will ask you to line up in a row facing one direction. You might be asked to back your horse, but usually the judge merely looks over each horse and rider a final time before handing in the judging card.

Remember that showing your horse should be able gaining better experience and improving your riding skills. While ribbons are nice they should not be your top priority. Most shows pin to 6th place but some will offer ribbons to 8th or even 10th place. There is rarely prize money at the schooling level.

Hopefully you now have a better idea of what to expect when attending your first hunter show. If possible bring a knowledgeable friend or coach to help walk you through the process and give you an extra set of hands. Remember, showing should be fun, so don’t get too worked up about it. If you relax and take your time your first showing experience can be a great one.

Muscle mass training requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but if you understand the science of your body, you know that you can have a workout in as little as 7 minutes. Your muscles can't grow, if you're not putting in the proper nutrition to achieve it. It seems like common sense, but people totally ignore it. I used to be like them, but once I started planning out my diet, I start putting on a lot of muscle mass. I think a good first step is just cutting out all that processed food. Start eating things that are "real" and aren't filled with different chemicals.

Having a proper training routine can really change the amount of time you have to invest in gaining muscle mass. I used to spend over an hour in the gym, but I'd never break a sweat. I realized the key that missing from my workout was intensity. Intensity puts stress on your body and forces it to adapt. This means muscles will grow. I have short 7 minute workouts, but they're extremely intense and I'm sweating at the end of it.
